I recently picked up “The House On Panicked Hill” at The Bargain Shop with the expectation that if the relate wasn’t very marvelous, I could at least sell it second hand and compose my money aid. To be impartial, there were some age spots and some very unruffled grain, but overall I found the movie very appetizing. Even more suprising was the addition of three modern trailers of William Castle’s other films (Mr. Sardonicus, Zotz! and Homicidal) as well as a text biography of William Castle. There are also scene selections as well. Overall a very elegant presentation by Platinum Disc Corporation. Highly recommended for Vincent Trace fans!

“The House on Timorous Hill” is one of those rare alarm movies that seems as unique as if it were made yesterday. The script is clever, the acting is solid, and while the direction is a bit on the hammy side, the space is clever enough to support viewers riveted until the final twist. It’s alarm, myster and dismal comedy all in one.
Frederick Loren (Vincent Sign) decides to host a macabre birthday party for his devious wife Annabelle (Carol Ohmart), in the “House on Scared Hill.” He invites a test pilot, a columnist, a secretary and the house’s unbalanced owner, and offers each one ten thousand dollars if they halt all night. But as the night goes on, unpleasant Nora Manning (Carolyn Craig) begins to view specters and rotted heads. William Castle made a lot of slightly kitschy fright movies like “13 Ghosts” and “The Tingler,” but this clever twist on haunted-house movies is probably his best work ever. Okay, that dancing skeleton is unintentionally comical, as is the gliding crone. But most of the time, it provides some in-your-face chills and tall work from Stamp.
This movie has solid dialogue (”Do you remember the fun we had when you poisoned me? “) and some truly contemptible exchanges between Brand and Ohmart, as spouses who completely despise one another. Castle’s unfamiliar sense of humor shows up in the coffin-shaped boxes, the vat of acid, and the organ playing itself.
But the most impressive aspect of “House” is that it’s not unbiased another ghosts-terrify-screaming-idiots movie. It’s more of a mystery, before the crime is committed. We’re never quite definite if there really are ghosts haunting the region, or if the humans are the ones who are really causing all this inconvenience. What’s really scary is that the humans are more repulsive.
Vincent Brand is definitely the star here — creepy, lustrous, debonair, and he has an acid comment for every occasion (”Don’t halt up thinking of ways to procure rid of me. It makes wrinkles”) . Ohmart runs a cessation second with her seductive, devious trophy wife; the other actors do solid jobs as well, although Craig doesn’t do worthy except protest periodically.
It’s should be well-known that the Platinum Movies version of this is a decent inexpensive version to catch. Many public domain movies are in depraved condition, but the print for this is a bit spotty, but natty enough for viewing without the distraction of crackles, splices and weak print.
“House on Worried Hill” is a deserving vintage apprehension movie — a twisty set, and Label at his finest. A must-see.

An anti-virus software program is a computer program that can be used to scan files to identify and eliminate computer viruses and other malicious software (malware).
Anti-virus software typically uses two different techniques to accomplish this:
Examining files to look for known viruses by means of a virus dictionary
Identifying suspicious behavior from any computer program which might indicate infection
Most commercial anti-virus software uses both of these approaches, with an emphasis on the virus dictionary approach.
Virus dictionary approach
In the virus dictionary approach, when the anti-virus software examines a file, it refers to a dictionary of known viruses that have been identified by the author of the anti-virus software. Unlike the dictionary approach, the suspicious behavior approach therefore provides protection against brand-new viruses that do not yet exist in any virus dictionaries. However, it also sounds a large number of false positives, and users probably become desensitized to all the warnings. If the user clicks “Accept” on every such warning, then the anti-virus software is obviously useless to that user. This problem has especially been made worse over the past 7 years, since many more nonmalicious program designs chose to modify other .exes without regards to this false positive issue. Thus, most modern anti virus software uses this technique less and less.
Other ways to detect viruses
Some antivirus-software will try to emulate the beginning of the code of each new executable that is being executed before transferring control to the executable. If the program seems to be using self-modifying code or otherwise appears as a virus (it immeadeatly tries to find other executables), one could assume that the executable has been infected with a virus. However, this method results in a lot of false positives.
Yet another detection method is using a sandbox. A sandbox emulates the operating system and runs the executable in this simulation. After the program has terminated, the sandbox is analysed for changes which might indicate a virus. Because of performance issues this type of detection is normally only performed during on-demand scans.
Issues of concern
Macro viruses, arguably the most destructive and widespread computer viruses, could be prevented far more inexpensively and effectively, and without the need of all users to buy anti-virus software, if Microsoft would fix security flaws in Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Office related to the execution of downloaded code and to the ability of document macros to spread and wreak havoc.
User education is as important as anti-virus software; simply training users in safe computing practices, such as not downloading and executing unknown programs from the Internet, would slow the spread of viruses, without the need of anti-virus software.
Computer users should not always run with administrator access to their own machine. If they would simply run in user mode then some types of viruses would not be able to spread.
The dictionary approach to detecting viruses is often insufficient due to the continual creation of new viruses, yet the suspicious behavior approach is ineffective due to the false positive problem; hence, the current understanding of anti-virus software will never conquer computer viruses.
There are various methods of encrypting and packing malicious software which will make even well-known viruses undetectable to anti-virus software. Detecting these “camouflaged” viruses requires a powerful unpacking engine, which can decrypt the files before examining them. If you haven’t seen this 1991 classic comedy, study it now.
The premise is that we follow events during one night in taxis in several places around the world: Unique York, LA, Paris, Rome, and Helsinki. The best, by far, the one I always consider of first when someone mentions this incredibly comical and touching film, is the one site in Rome with Roberto Benigni as the taxi driver. He gives this rambling monologue sort of a confession about lambs and pumpkins and sex that you HAVE to gawk the movie to devour. There’s a priest in the benefit seat getting more and more `cardiac challenged’ by the specific nature of this confession. It’s a qualified status portion, and I always rewind and scrutinize that sequence at least 2-3 more times. It is objective as laughable on the 3rd viewing as it was on the first.

There isn’t noteworthy going on in Jim Jarmusch film, but there’s a lot happening beneath the surface. Even more than he is a terrific filmmaker and a fabulous screenwriter, Jarmusch is a huge observer of human nature. Even though ‘Dead Man’ and ‘Ghost Dog’ are the films that gave him more widespread commercial success, these are not typical of his style; Jarmusch’s early film hardly have any residence at all, and all they give us is fragments of human lives. His arrive towards his characters is always very up-close and personal, but never first-person; the viewer is always an observant, sometimes as comfortable as a finish friend, sometimes too stop for comfort, almost a voyeur. And yet, with his amazing insight into the human soul and what makes it tick, Jarmusch makes every one of his characters advance to fleshy life - even though there are no internal monologues, no revealing close-ups; Jarmusch creates his characters solely through their behavior; and he understands people so well, that in doing so he completely transcends the boundaries of language, culture and nationality.
Like Jarmusch’s previous film, ‘Mystery Train’, ‘Night On Earth’ gives us several different stories about different characters from different backgrounds. This time, though, there is not the slightest connection between the stories, except a thematic one: we are shown five stories taking space in taxi cabs in five different major cities around the world.

The first epic takes region in Los Angeles, and in it is a twenty year weak (but she looks seventeen at most!) Winona Ryder, current from her atomize in Beetle Juice and Edward Scissorhands, who plays a young, perky, smart-ass, chain-smoking taxi driver and gives one of the most shiny performances of her career; opposite her is another terrific actress, Gena Rowlands, as an uptight, busy Hollywood agent.

The fourth memoir, taking position in Rome, is practically full-out Italian comedy, with Jarmusch’s obsolete friend Roberto Benigni plays a bizarre taxi driver who’s giving a bishop (or is he? ) a hard time for his money.
Finally, in the fifth anecdote, located in Helsinki, the incredible Matti Pellonpaa plays Mika, a cheery yet dismal driver, who picks up three young drunkards and shows to them the upright nature of wound.
Each one of these stories has a very clear and new atmosphere, ranging from comedy to drama, and revealing, often, the different mentalities of the different countries; the humanity, though, runs all the design through. All of Jarmusch’s characters are different and yet the same; they are all equally human, and he understands them all, but each one on their maintain terms. Jarmusch’s observation is always brutally frank and actual, and always loving and forgiving, for all of his characters equally. Night On Earth is sometimes shaded, often humorous, mostly touching and always radiant. There may not be powerful going on, but it never fails to fascinate.

First, let me say that I hold this movie because it smooth retains it’s charm more than three decades later, and collected bag a kick out of it. I can prefer watching it on TV when I was a kid, and would protest the catchy Miser’s songs. So having it on hand to explore it every year at Christmastime is a pleasure.

I was looking forward to upgrade from my older DVD of YWASC to this “Deluxe Edition” since I was eager on seeing a couple of documentaries and celebrated the product being advertised as “Newly Remastered”. Well, in looking at the Recent 2000 DVD release, I realized that it is quite appealing in narrate, as well as having a decent mono audio track. I noticed there were scarcely any grain or dirt on this print. So maybe I could not survey a need to upgrade after all, and, as it turns out, I was factual in my assumption. I rather like to fabricate portray comparisons with different DVD releases of a well-liked movie, and I did the same with YWASC. Considerable to my surprise, the image is not only NOT an improvement, but to my eyes, in some instances has less sharpness and is duller in the colors! Again, in the first DVD release, one can contemplate the finest details in say the puppet’s hairs. Enormous clarity. With this novel edition, there are periodic (though admittedly minor) inconsistancies in image. Sorry, I know I could pick up flack for what might be considered a minor quibble, but I feel that, apart from two (fairly lively) documentaries, one could unprejudiced as well not bother to invest in this repackaging of what was an already very adequate DVD release.

Along with Rankin and Bass’ other, earlier classic, Rudolph, The Red-nosed Reindeer, Year Without A Santa Claus is a gem that will charm for generations. I was gald to support SPARKHILL with the documentary that is on this DVD! Finally, you will hear from the creators. While I applaud WARNER BROTHERS for including this, I wish their accurate dept. would have let the RANKIN/BASS archives flourish in this doc as well BUT they did not. At least the interviews are here and you accumulate to hear from the creators themselves! Maybe now, WB will do a RANKIN/BASS DVD box space and include what fans have been asking for: THE LIFE AND ADVENTURES OF SANTA CLAUS, THE Exiguous DRUMMER BOY, BOOK 2, PINOCCHIO’S CHRISTMAS, THE LEAPRECHAUN’S CHRISTMAS GOLD, etc. There also needs to be a deluxe edition of THE FLIGHT OF DRAGONS. If WB owns THE BERMUDA DEPTHS, that needs to arrive out too. Contented HOLIDAYS 2007!

I bought the video to Pure Country after listening to the soundtrack album. The movie is well-done. George Strait plays Dusty Chandler, a country music superstar who gets tired of the loud sound and overhyped special effects(smoke and strobe lights) in his shows. After an argument with his manager, Lula Rogers(played by Lesley Ann Warren), Dusty says to his best friend, Earl(John Doe), “I’m honest gonna consume me a diminutive wobble,” and he does that. He returns to his mature hometown, cuts off his beard and ponytail, and tries to net succor to his down-home country roots, going first to his Grandma Ivy’s house and then to the bar where he once played. After Dusty leaves town, Lula tries to sustain his prove going at all costs. With some primary concert dates coming up, including one in Las Vegas, she hires Buddy(Kyle Chandler), a member of Dusty’s road crew, to lip-synch his songs. He accepts Harley’s offer of breakfast and later finds himself taking roping lessons.
